Project Engineer – Mechanical Design & Machine Automation
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Industry: Manufacturing / Automation / Machine Design

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to lead the mechanical design and development of custom machine design/build projects. This role is ideal for engineers with a strong mechanical design background, hands-on experience with manufacturing automation, and a track record of successfully delivering projects on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the mechanical design for assigned projects under the direction of the Project Manager.
  • Understand and address all technical aspects affecting the project, including customer specifications, cycle times, pneumatics, hydraulics, and other critical factors.
  • Develop and maintain project budgets, schedules, and engineering design release integrity.
  • Break down large design efforts into manageable tasks and oversee in-house designers and/or outside design houses.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to ensure proper integration of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Apply best practices in design, material selection, and manufacturing processes to deliver reliable, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Track project progress, document technical challenges, and communicate status to management and stakeholders.
  • Participate in design review meetings, customer communications, and project documentation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or a related technical field; relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
  • 5–10 years of experience in custom machine design, build, and implementation.
  • 2–5 years of direct experience in manufacturing engineering, automation, or machine design and start-up.
  • Strong mechanical design skills with hands-on experience in tooling, robotics/vision systems, machine tools, and factory floor automation.
  • Experience with welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, PAW), laser/plasma cutting, and/or high-speed assembly equipment.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (required) and familiarity with AutoCAD, 3D CAD, or industrial PC/robotics programming. Knowledge of programming languages (C, FORTRAN, Ladder Logic) is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Proven ability to manage large projects, schedules, and cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Microsoft Project and other project management software.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition, computer controls, and packaging equipment.
